By the Book
by Denise Felt 1998
Theoretically it won't
kill me to live without your smile.
I know that physically
no one's heart ever truly breaks.
But nevertheless when I
wake I fight my grief awhile,
and my traitorous heart --
though still in one piece -- often aches.
(This poem was written as a companion piece to the UFO story that eventually became "The Worst-Case Scenario.")
